Author's Notes

The inspiration to compile the S&K Directory was a vast network of companies, writers, organizations, teachers, travelers, foundations, institutions and media dedicated to sustainable and kind tourism. In the original research to create a book about the kindness of travel I was overwhelmed with the wealth of information and resources…and so the directory! I hope this directory will provide the traveler with the resources, tools and inspiration to create that next great journey, and shine a light on those who have dedicated their businesses and lives into creating a more compassionate and sustainable experience for the responsible traveler.

I have worked in over sixty countries as an economic development consultant for the State Department (USAID), World Bank, UNESCO, Smithsonian Institute, and other international foundations and governments focused on micro, small and medium enterprises in emerging economies. Working in such a close and intimate way with people facing unbelievable challenges has been humbling. I have witnessed the quiet heroism of people striving to provide for their families and educate their children in challenging and often dangerous environments, and witnessed the cruel oppression, lack of education and opportunities for women in conflict zones in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

My travels and experiences have been a true gift! Sadly, through these many journeys I’ve observed tourists who drop in, take selfies, shop, and fly out with no real connection to the land, culture, or people left in their wake. As global citizens we must all work to move the needle to a more compassionate and kinder world, so slow down, get off the phone…and connect!
